Traction Chain

Traction Chain

Traction Chain

The chains, when installed correctly, work pretty well. The inline part of the chain is not very effective. The chain material is not a good quality metal. If you have to use the chains for a long time they will wear out fairly quickly. I live in northern Wisconsin. For occasional use they work fine. Learn how to install the chains before you need to use them. They are tricky to put on if you have not practiced.

These chains are easy on & off, and work great on my driveway (1+ mile long, uphill dirt & gravel road) in Upstate New York. Great traction in snow and or ice as well. Highly recommend. Also, they were ordered on one day and came the very next!

Peerless 0231905 Auto-Trac Light Truck/SUV Tire Chain

Automatic Truck Tire Chains

FITMENT & INSTALL - I have a Tacoma with 31/10.5/R15's, matched my tire size to the correct Peerless product using the convenient fitment guide provided (at least at this time) on the Amazon product page (there is also a fitment guide on the Peerless website, I double-checked because I'm paranoid like that). The installation process is lined out in 6 steps with the provided installation guide, and it takes me about a minute to 90 seconds per tire to get the chains on. The small amount of slack that will be in the chains to begin with will quickly be worked out after a couple hundred feet or less. I usually double-check after rolling for a while to be sure the ratcheting system is working properly, but I haven't run into any problems yet. Read More

These have been a life saver here in Oregon. We just had the worst snow storm in 40 years. All local stores are sold out or raising their prices because of the weather. I had these over-nighted to me and I couldn't be happier. They are reasonably easy to get on and they stay in place.I've been using them in very deep snow & ice for about 4 days and have had no problems at all. Great price and an excellent buy!

Security Chain Company Super Z6, SZ447, Cable Chain for Pickups & SUVs - Set of 2

 How to

There are a confusing array of tire chains/traction control devices on the market, and even this particular company makes so many different models that it's hard to tell which ones are the best. Here's what you need to know about chains and traction control devices, and why I like the ones made by SCC. I also include some installation hints at the bottom of this review. Read More

I purchased a 2012 Chevrolet 2500 4X4 last year and from previous experience of driving 4 wheel drive pickups as a civilian and in the Army, I knew 4x4s gave inexperienced drivers too much confidence in certain snow conditions, especially on roads having hidden layers of frozen ice underneath snow. I would have purchased 2 sets last year, but I read several bad reviews about the cables and decided just to try one pair. When my first set arrived, they were in use a few weeks after Amazon sent them.

I was very impressed with the ease of installing these compared to conventional heavy tire chains I've used in the past. I'm pretty darned decrepit but it was very easy installing these. I practiced first in my driveway on a "nice" warm day. It is a simple matter of laying the cables in front of or behind the tires on the ground and then pulling your vehicle directly over the cables and "draping" them on top of and over the tires and fastening a small hook on the back, and a "clog" like catch about the size of a pencil eraser on the outside. I have a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder and bursitis in both shoulders as well as arthritis, and I was concerned when I ordered these from Amazon, if I would be able to install them by myself, but it literally (and figuratively) was a snap. The rubber tension bands easily connect on the outside and they snug the cables up tight on the tires.

When the first snow came last year, I found the cables worked like a charm on my farm. I used them hard-packed dirt roads covered in snow, in mud and slush and as well on the highway having both snow and ice. I was so impressed, I bought a second set to use on the front wheels. Today (exactly one year later), the second set was a life saver.

SC1038 Radial Chain Cable Traction Tire

SC1038 Radial Chain Cable Traction Tire

SC1038 Radial Chain Cable Traction Tire

For the price that these were going for, I should really give it 4 stars, but its about the product and not the price. These chains will work well enough for a decent amount of snow and has never steered me wrong. They take some effort putting them on and taking them off. They are safe on your tires and I've never had a problem with them rubbing and they are still lasting after two trips to the snow (yeah, it hasn't been that many times) But for 24$ a set, using them twice already paid for itself.

I do want to make a suggestion though. Put them on at home. Figure out how many links it takes to secure the inner part of the chains to have it seat properly. Once you know this, when you install them in the snow, just hook up the inner side of the chains the same amount of links. Drive forward a little and link the outside. If you've done it properly, your chains should be tight enough without having to constantly check if they need to be tightened.
