Security Chain Company Super Z6, SZ447, Cable Chain for Pickups & SUVs - Set of 2

 How to

There are a confusing array of tire chains/traction control devices on the market, and even this particular company makes so many different models that it's hard to tell which ones are the best. Here's what you need to know about chains and traction control devices, and why I like the ones made by SCC. I also include some installation hints at the bottom of this review. Read More

I purchased a 2012 Chevrolet 2500 4X4 last year and from previous experience of driving 4 wheel drive pickups as a civilian and in the Army, I knew 4x4s gave inexperienced drivers too much confidence in certain snow conditions, especially on roads having hidden layers of frozen ice underneath snow. I would have purchased 2 sets last year, but I read several bad reviews about the cables and decided just to try one pair. When my first set arrived, they were in use a few weeks after Amazon sent them.

I was very impressed with the ease of installing these compared to conventional heavy tire chains I've used in the past. I'm pretty darned decrepit but it was very easy installing these. I practiced first in my driveway on a "nice" warm day. It is a simple matter of laying the cables in front of or behind the tires on the ground and then pulling your vehicle directly over the cables and "draping" them on top of and over the tires and fastening a small hook on the back, and a "clog" like catch about the size of a pencil eraser on the outside. I have a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder and bursitis in both shoulders as well as arthritis, and I was concerned when I ordered these from Amazon, if I would be able to install them by myself, but it literally (and figuratively) was a snap. The rubber tension bands easily connect on the outside and they snug the cables up tight on the tires.

When the first snow came last year, I found the cables worked like a charm on my farm. I used them hard-packed dirt roads covered in snow, in mud and slush and as well on the highway having both snow and ice. I was so impressed, I bought a second set to use on the front wheels. Today (exactly one year later), the second set was a life saver.

SC1038 Radial Chain Cable Traction Tire

SC1038 Radial Chain Cable Traction Tire

SC1038 Radial Chain Cable Traction Tire

For the price that these were going for, I should really give it 4 stars, but its about the product and not the price. These chains will work well enough for a decent amount of snow and has never steered me wrong. They take some effort putting them on and taking them off. They are safe on your tires and I've never had a problem with them rubbing and they are still lasting after two trips to the snow (yeah, it hasn't been that many times) But for 24$ a set, using them twice already paid for itself.

I do want to make a suggestion though. Put them on at home. Figure out how many links it takes to secure the inner part of the chains to have it seat properly. Once you know this, when you install them in the snow, just hook up the inner side of the chains the same amount of links. Drive forward a little and link the outside. If you've done it properly, your chains should be tight enough without having to constantly check if they need to be tightened.

Radial Chain LT Tire Chains

Radial Chain LT Tire Chains

Radial Chain LT Tire Chains

I bought these chains because they are called for in my Honda CR-V manual. They fit.

In the box, Radial Chain LT looked like they had been used - dusty, corrosion, no instructions - but they were new.

I installed them during fine weather but could not fit all the end-bushings throught the end-hook. I had to grind the burrs off the bushings so they would fit through the end-hook easily. They would have failed to be useful if trying to install them when needed for traction.

I decided to keep them and make them work because they fit my car which has little clearance.
Be sure to test them before trying to install them while lying in the snow.

Truck Snow Chain, Size 245

Truck Snow Chain, Size 245

Truck Snow Chain, Size 245

The chains, when installed correctly, work pretty well. The inline part of the chain is not very effective. The chain material is not a good quality metal. If you have to use the chains for a long time they will wear out fairly quickly. I live in northern Wisconsin. For occasional use they work fine. Learn how to install the chains before you need to use them. They are tricky to put on if you have not practiced.

Light Truck Traction Chain Rubber Tightener

Light Truck Traction Chain Rubber Tightener

Light Truck Traction Chain Rubber Tightener

They are very necessary to insure a snug fit of your chains to the tires. I found them to be somewhat difficult to install the first time due to the fact that you must stretch the rubber to get the clips to reach the chains. The tension of the rubber ring is what tightens the chains. I hope that it will be easier next time. I recommend working clips at opposite ends of the ring as opposed to going around the ring in a circular fashion. When you go around, the last couple of hooks will be very tight and hard to attach. It should be easier if you clip one hook at 12 oclock and then the next at about 6 oclock, then work the sides from there.

Z6, SZ143, Cable Chain

Z6, SZ143, Cable Chain

My first time using these was great. Record snow storm in So Cal mountains required cables and i never lost traction and only took about 3 minutes each wheel to install. Once your experienced- allow 2 min/per wheel. The split design that allows you to install them without driving onto them is perfect. Removal only takes about 1-2 min/per wheel. I ended up having to drive on them for 3 miles on bare roads without any problems or signs of wear. I also was able to plow through 2 feet of packed snow in a Honda minivan. Update- for rims that bulge out in the middle, the tighteners may rub on it leaving a mark. It just depends on your wheel style.

Auto-Trac Light Truck SUV Tire Chain

Auto-Trac Light Truck SUV Tire Chain

Auto-Trac Light Truck SUV Tire Chain

I was wary of buying these chains without any reviews to go off of, but I read reviews and forum comments from other sources on the web to find that Peerless makes a great product. I made the leap, and I am extremely happy with what I got. First, I'll give you the positives, then I'll list a couple of negatives or potential negatives.

FITMENT & INSTALL - I have a Tacoma with 31/10.5/R15's, matched my tire size to the correct Peerless product using the convenient fitment guide provided (at least at this time) on the Amazon product page (there is also a fitment guide on the Peerless website, I double-checked because I'm paranoid like that). The installation process is lined out in 6 steps with the provided installation guide, and it takes me about a minute to 90 seconds per tire to get the chains on. The small amount of slack that will be in the chains to begin with will quickly be worked out after a couple hundred feet or less. I usually double-check after rolling for a while to be sure the ratcheting system is working properly, but I haven't run into any problems yet.

TRACTION - Traction is great. Full disclosure, I'm not extremely experienced with chains. I live in the desert, and there are only one or two occasions a year that I can bring these chains up to the snow country and have some fun. The vast majority of the time, I don't need them, but it's comforting to know that they're ready and willing if such a challenge arises that I need to use them. So far, they have not let me down, and I can't imagine a situation in which they would fail me and a different chain would succeed.

RIDE QUALITY - Ride quality is fair to good, considering the effect that snow chains typically have on ride quality.

Well I live up in Alaska so for about 6 months out of the year the roads are covered in ice and the ditches are full of vehicles and bottomless snow pits. Now I only use the chains when i have to which is very rarly but they make all the difference especially these! I own a 4x4 Ranger and with the V bar chains I can pull just about anyone out. I have pulled out more 1 tons from ditches with these then any other type of chain or other traction device. Once you get them on the v bars dig right into the ice and give you all the traction you could ever need. I plan on ordering another set once I have some extra money.
